JY Power was part of an important stage in SMS Car Audio’s electrical-system history. We do not currently stock JY Power, but the products and systems we worked with during that period helped build the foundation for how we approach modern high-current electrical systems—including the sodium-ion systems we work with today.

The technology changes. The basic problem does not: if the audio system is asking for more current than the vehicle can reliably supply, adding amplifier power by itself will not fix it.

What we learned building higher-current systems

As systems became more powerful, electrical support had to become part of the build instead of an afterthought. Products such as JY Power batteries and hybrid capacitor solutions gave us another tool for dealing with voltage stability and short-duration current demand, but they also reinforced something we still tell customers today: there is no single electrical part that fixes every vehicle.

A battery cannot make up for an undersized charging system forever. A high-output alternator does not help if the wiring, grounds or connections cannot carry the current. A capacitor is not a substitute for the storage or charging capacity the system actually requires.

Capacitor, battery or alternator?

They solve different parts of the problem.

  • Capacitors and hybrid capacitor banks can respond quickly to short current demands and help stabilize voltage in the right application.
  • Batteries provide stored energy and reserve capacity when system demand exceeds what the charging system is supplying at that moment.
  • High-output alternators increase the vehicle’s ability to produce current while the engine is running.
  • Wiring, grounds and fusing determine whether that current can actually move through the vehicle safely and with minimal voltage loss.

The correct answer can be one of those pieces or a combination of them. That is why we diagnose the electrical system around the actual amplifier demand, vehicle charging system and how the customer uses the system.

From earlier electrical builds to sodium-ion

Our work with JY Power and other electrical platforms was part of the progression that brought us into newer storage technologies. Today, sodium-ion gives us another option for supporting demanding audio systems, but we approach it with the same system-first thinking.

We look at amplifier demand, alternator output, battery or storage capacity, cable size, grounds, fusing, voltage behavior and the vehicle itself. The chemistry may be different, but the electrical system still has to work as one complete system.

That history matters because SMS did not start learning high-current electrical when sodium-ion showed up. The products have evolved, and the brands we stock have changed, but the experience carries forward.
