Why the Enclosure Changes the Result

The enclosure controls how the cone is loaded and how efficiently the system uses the available power. Internal volume, air leaks, port area, port length, tuning, panel strength, and vehicle loading can change output and sound quality even when the subwoofer and amplifier remain the same.

  • Too little airspace can reduce low-frequency extension and increase pressure on the woofer.
  • Too much airspace can reduce mechanical control in some applications.
  • Insufficient port area can create turbulence and compression.

A sealed enclosure is generally compact and uses trapped air to help control cone motion. A ported enclosure can provide more output around its tuning range but requires more space and enough port area and length to operate correctly.
