Build the Plan Before You Pick the Parts.

Most systems that disappoint are not missing a more expensive speaker or amplifier. The plan is incomplete: the factory signal was never checked, the channel map changed halfway through the build, the enclosure did not match the vehicle, or the electrical system was treated as an afterthought. This is the order we use at SMS before equipment is ordered and installation begins.

The actual order of operations

Six decisions that build one complete system.

These decisions are connected. If an early decision changes, the equipment, fabrication, wiring, or tuning after it may change too. That is why a product list is not the same thing as a system design.

    Vehicle & Factory System

    We identify the exact year, make, model, trim, factory radio, audio package, amplifier, speaker locations, charging behavior, available space, and the features tied to the original system.

    • Chimes, warning tones, cameras, steering-wheel controls, ANC, and factory microphones
    • Speaker depth, mounting access, cargo use, seat movement, weather exposure, and service access
    • What can be retained, what must be interfaced, and what should not be disturbed
  2. Define the target

    Listening Goal & Priorities

    “Better sound” can mean a clean daily-driver upgrade, an accurate front stage, louder music with less strain, stronger bass, or a complete show-quality build. We define the result before deciding what belongs in the vehicle.

    • Primary listening seat, music, normal listening level, and the problem you hear now
    • Sound quality, output, bass extension, cargo space, appearance, and factory-look priorities
    • Complete build now or a staged plan that does not buy the same part twice
  3. Verify the input

    Source & Signal Strategy

    Keeping a factory radio does not automatically mean a DSP will solve everything. The available signal has to be identified and, when necessary, measured before an interface, processor, or amplifier is selected.

    • Full-range or band-limited channels, active crossovers, factory EQ, bass roll-off, delay, limiting, and polarity
    • Volume behavior, source changes, retained controls, warning tones, and premium factory amplification
    • Input channels, summing, load requirements, routing, controller needs, and future expansion
  4. Lay out the acoustic system

    Speakers, Subwoofers & Enclosure

    Driver choice follows location, bandwidth, output target, installation, and the channels available to control it. The enclosure is part of the subwoofer system—not packaging around it.

    • Front-stage locations, mounting strength, sealing, aiming, crossover responsibilities, and sound treatment
    • Whether rear speakers serve passengers, rear fill, or no useful role in the stated goal
    • Subwoofer alignment, true net volume, displacement, port area and length, loading, cargo space, and serviceability
  5. Support the layout

    Amplification, DSP & Electrical

    Power is matched after the load, channel map, crossover plan, and intended use are known. The electrical plan follows the system’s real current demand and the vehicle’s charging behavior.

    • Final impedance, usable amplifier power, gain structure, high-pass protection, cooling, and service access
    • DSP outputs, routing, presets, level control, subwoofer control, and expansion channels
    • Wire size, fuse protection, grounds, distribution, battery condition, alternator output, and voltage under load
  6. Build, prove, then tune

    Installation, Verification & Tuning

    Programming cannot correct a loose speaker mount, air leak, reversed driver, noisy ground, weak connection, or enclosure problem. The physical system is completed and verified before final calibration.

    • Fabrication, mounting, sealing, protection, wire routing, labeling, ventilation, and service access
    • Polarity, noise, rattles, voltage, controls, factory functions, and mechanical operation
    • Polarity and delay, crossovers, levels, equalization, subwoofer integration, listening, and final verification

From the installation bay

Three details that prevent expensive do-overs.

The enclosure belongs in the design.

Gross outside dimensions are not usable enclosure volume. Driver displacement, port displacement, bracing, material thickness, loading, and the space left in the vehicle all affect the result.

The fuse protects the wire.

Fuse location and rating are based on the cable and the current it can safely carry. Amplifier fuses do not replace protection at the power source, and a larger fuse does not create more electrical capacity.

Tuning is the final step, not the repair step.

Mounting, polarity, signal routing, gain structure, noise, rattles, voltage, and mechanical problems have to be correct first. Calibration finishes a sound installation; it does not hide a bad one.
