Car Audio FAQ
Straight answers about system design, tuning, power, and what to expect when you build with SMS Car Audio.
How do I choose the right speakers for my vehicle?
Match the speaker size and power handling to your amplifier or factory system. Coaxials are simple drop-ins; components with separate tweeters give better imaging. We carry brands like Kicker, Focal, and MMATS for every level.
Should I upgrade speakers or amp first?
Speakers make the biggest difference in tone, but they need clean power. We recommend upgrading both together so you get full control over tuning and protection.
What size subwoofer is best?
10" and 12" subs offer balanced response; 15"+ subs move more air but need more space and power. We design custom enclosures tuned for your vehicle’s acoustics and your goals (SQ or SPL).
What’s the difference between RMS and Max power?
RMS is continuous real-world power. Max is a marketing peak number. Always match amps and speakers by RMS ratings for reliability and sound quality.
Do I need the Big-3 upgrade?
If your system pulls more than ~1000 W RMS total, yes. Upgrading the battery-to-chassis, engine-ground, and alternator-charge wires reduces voltage drop and keeps amplifiers happy.
What size power wire should I use?
Wire size depends on total wattage and current draw (amperage) of your system, plus the length of the run. Higher-power amps or long cable runs require thicker gauge wire to avoid voltage drop and heat buildup. We can spec the correct size for your system during install.
When should I add a secondary battery or lithium cell?
Anytime voltage sags during heavy bass hits or lights dim. Lithium options like Vault or XS Power keep stable voltage for high-draw builds.
What is a DSP and why does it matter?
A Digital Signal Processor allows precise EQ, crossovers, time alignment, and phase control per channel. It’s the brain that makes aftermarket systems integrate perfectly with factory sources and sound balanced.
Do you tune in-car or on the bench?
We tune in-vehicle using calibrated mics (GA Barnie binaural) and Open Sound Meter software to measure each seating position. That ensures real acoustic alignment, not just bench specs.
How long does tuning take?
Usually 1–3 hours depending on channel count and complexity. Multi-amp or show-level systems can take longer as we fine-tune phase and target curves.
Can I keep my factory head unit?
Yes — we integrate factory radios via DSP interfaces or high-level inputs. You keep steering-wheel controls and factory look while gaining full processing power.
Are your installs reversible?
All SMS installs are serviceable and clean. We avoid cutting factory harnesses unless necessary and can return systems to stock when selling or trading a vehicle.

Do you handle marine, SxS, or motorcycle audio?
Absolutely. We build sealed and weather-ready systems for Jeeps, Harleys, and side-by-sides using waterproof gear and corrosion-safe wiring.
Do I need to drop off my vehicle?
Yes — all installs are drop-off only. This lets us work efficiently, test thoroughly, and ensure your system is tuned and ready for pickup.
