SMS Car Audio Install Process

A clean install is not just about mounting parts. SMS Car Audio plans the vehicle, product path, wiring, signal integration, electrical support, fabrication, DSP tuning, and final customer handoff so the system works, sounds right, and can be serviced later.

Step 1: Vehicle and Goal Review

The first step is understanding the vehicle and what the customer actually wants. A Jeep, truck, Harley, SXS, Slingshot, daily driver, luxury vehicle, or factory premium-audio vehicle may need a completely different install path even when the product list looks similar.

  • Vehicle year, make, model, trim, and factory audio package.
  • Current radio, factory amplifier, speakers, subwoofers, DSP, lighting, or previous wiring.
  • Customer goal: cleaner sound, louder output, more bass, better staging, custom lighting, OEM retention, or full build.
  • Budget range, timeline, daily use, and future upgrade path.

Step 2: Product and Integration Planning

Before parts are ordered, SMS checks whether the system needs factory integration, CarPlay or Android Auto, steering wheel control retention, camera retention, DSP, amplifier channels, custom adapters, battery support, or a subwoofer enclosure plan.

  • Speaker fitment, adapter rings, mounting depth, tweeter locations, and grille clearance.
  • Amplifier power, channel count, wire size, fuse planning, and mounting location.
  • Factory radio signal, OEM amplifier behavior, load requirements, and DSP needs.
  • Subwoofer enclosure size, vehicle space, final impedance, and bass goal.
  • Camera, USB, chime, steering wheel control, and factory feature retention.

Step 3: Quote, Parts, and Scheduling

Once the plan is clear, SMS can quote the job properly. That quote may include products, adapters, wiring, integration parts, labor, fabrication, tuning, electrical support, special-order items, or custom work.

  • SMS confirms the agreed work before scheduling.
  • Special-order products or custom work may require deposit or full payment.
  • Customer-supplied products may need inspection and may not receive the same support as SMS-supplied gear.
  • Appointment length depends on the vehicle, hidden conditions, fabrication, wiring, and tuning needs.

Step 4: Clean Installation

SMS installs with attention to signal path, power path, protection, serviceability, and vehicle fitment. A good install is not just hidden wires; it is correct routing, solid mounting, safe fusing, clean grounds, protected cable, and a layout that makes sense.

  • Safe power and ground routing with appropriate fuse protection.
  • Clean amplifier, DSP, speaker, and subwoofer wiring layout.
  • Speaker adapters, sealed mounts, grille clearance, and polarity checks.
  • Factory feature checks for cameras, steering wheel controls, chimes, USB, and source operation.
  • Fabrication, enclosure work, lighting, or custom panels when included in the build.

Step 5: DSP, Amplifier Setup, and Testing

After the physical install, the system still needs setup. Gain structure, crossovers, polarity, phase, DSP routing, EQ, time alignment, subwoofer blending, and listening checks make the system perform inside the actual vehicle.

Step 6: Customer Handoff

The final handoff matters. SMS reviews the finished result, basic operation, source behavior, subwoofer controls when applicable, DSP presets when available, camera operation, and any care notes for the customer.

  • Confirm sound, controls, camera function, radio function, and retained features.
  • Explain anything the customer needs to know before leaving.
  • Point the customer toward future upgrades if the build was done in stages.
  • Keep the support path clear if questions come up after the install.

What to Send Before Your Appointment

  • Vehicle year, make, model, trim, and factory audio package.
  • Photos of the radio, doors, trunk/cargo area, battery area, saddlebags, or current wiring when helpful.
  • List of products already owned or installed.
  • Goal for the build: clarity, bass, volume, staging, lighting, fabrication, or full system.
  • Budget range and whether SMS is supplying the equipment.
