Metra JP-1014 Jeep Wrangler JL & Gladiator JT Lower-Dash Speaker Pods
The factory lower-dash speaker location is useful, but the factory enclosure is built around a much smaller driver. If the system plan calls for a real 6.5-inch-class midbass or midrange up front, the speaker cannot do its job properly if we are still trying to hang it off the stock 4-inch-style enclosure. The JP-1014 replaces the left and right lower-dash pods with sealed vehicle-specific enclosures that let us install most 6- to 6.75-inch aftermarket speakers in the factory location.
This is the mechanical foundation for a stronger front stage. More cone area gives us more output and more usable midbass potential than the original small lower-dash driver, but the speaker still has to be chosen around the enclosure volume, mounting depth, amplifier power, and crossover plan. The pod makes the larger speaker fit correctly; it does not turn every 6.5 into the right speaker for the Jeep.
2018–2023 JL / 2020–2023 JT
On the earlier JL/JT dash, JP-1014 gives us the sealed replacement enclosure and the larger speaker mounting surface while keeping the install in the factory lower-dash location. This is the straightforward route when we want a 6- to 6.75-inch front speaker instead of building a custom enclosure from scratch behind the dash.
2024–2026 JL / JT — The Grille Opening Changes the Job
The 2024–2026 Jeep dash still accepts the JP-1014 pod, but the visible factory lower-dash grille opening is only sized around the original 4-inch speaker area. If we are installing a larger 6- to 6.75-inch driver, that front opening has to be addressed too.
Metra’s matching solution is the JP-1020 lower-dash grille cut-in kit. It widens the driver and passenger lower-dash openings and adds the finished replacement grilles so the larger speaker is not playing into a restricted factory opening. JP-1020 is sold separately.
Why We Use a Sealed Vehicle-Specific Pod
A loose adapter ring and an open dash cavity are not the same thing as a real enclosure. JP-1014 gives the speaker a sealed ABS pod with known internal volume and factory mounting points. That gives us a more repeatable installation and lets the speaker operate in a controlled space instead of leaking front and rear output into the dash.
Metra publishes 171 cubic inches for the left pod and 178 cubic inches for the right. Those volumes matter when choosing the driver. A speaker that wants a large door cavity or a very different enclosure alignment may not be the best match just because its basket physically fits the opening.
Speaker Fit: 6 to 6.75 Inches, Up to 4 Inches Deep
Metra designs the pod around most 6- to 6.75-inch aftermarket speakers and allows up to 4 inches of mounting depth. It also supports the Chrysler three-hole speaker pattern used by select speakers, including Alpine models.
“Most” is the important word. Before we build the system around a particular driver, we still check the basket diameter, magnet diameter, terminal location, screw pattern, and actual depth. Oversized motors and unusual cast baskets can create problems even when the nominal speaker size is correct.
Factory Wiring Stays Intact
Each pod keeps the factory wiring-grommet location, and Metra includes two 12-inch speaker adapter harnesses. That lets us route the speaker wiring through the enclosure cleanly without cutting the Jeep’s factory harness just to make the lower-dash upgrade work.
Where JP-1014 Fits in a Real Jeep System
For a basic speaker upgrade, JP-1014 lets us move from the small factory lower-dash driver to a properly mounted 6.5-class speaker. In a larger amplified system, it becomes the lower part of the front stage: the 6/6.5 handles the body and midbass/midrange work while the dash tweeter or upper driver handles the top end.
If the build is active or DSP-controlled, we choose the crossover around the actual speaker and amplifier—not around a generic “6.5-inch” rule. If the Jeep is still on factory amplification, we also verify impedance and the factory signal before assuming a larger aftermarket driver will automatically perform better.
