Description
If you need a backup camera but do not want to start cutting the vehicle just to mount one, the GCH ESLPIRCAM is built around a simple license-plate location. The bracket mounts behind the front or rear plate, which gives us a clean installation point on a wide range of vehicles without drilling a dedicated camera opening.
The bigger reason to choose this version is low-light visibility. GCH uses two rows of eight infrared emitters around the camera so the picture does not depend only on the vehicle's reverse lights when backing up at night.
Designed for a Clean Universal Install
This is a universal camera, so the advantage is flexibility. It can work with an aftermarket radio, standalone display or other compatible camera input as long as the video connection and reverse-trigger strategy match the rest of the system.
Universal does not mean every mounting location is automatically correct. The plate still needs to remain visible and legal, the camera needs a useful viewing angle, and wiring has to be routed so a trunk, hatch or tailgate can move without pulling or pinching the cable.
Infrared Night Vision
GCH lists 16 infrared sensors arranged in two rows of eight. The camera automatically brings the IR illumination into play when needed, giving the system more usable image information in very low light than a basic plate camera that depends only on ambient lighting.
GCH also publishes a 0.1-lux low-light rating. Infrared night vision is still an aid, not a replacement for proper vehicle lighting and driver awareness, but it is useful when backing in dark driveways, parking areas or work environments.
Wide 170-Degree View
The published 170-degree field of view gives the camera a broad look behind the vehicle. That is useful for seeing objects near the corners of the bumper, but a wide-angle camera also introduces perspective distortion. We set the mounting angle so the driver gets useful coverage instead of simply maximizing how much pavement appears on screen.
Use It as an Additional View
A backup camera is there to add information, not replace your mirrors or a physical check around the vehicle. GCH specifically notes that the camera should be used together with the rear- and side-view mirrors. That is the right way to think about any reverse-camera system.
