Description
Vault Power LI-HD28 — 28Ah LiFePO4 Harley-Davidson Battery
The LI-HD28 was Vault Power’s first Harley-Davidson lithium battery and was built as more than a lightweight starting battery. Vault designed it around the factory Harley battery location, used top-mounted terminals and gave it 28Ah of LiFePO4 capacity with an onboard BMS.
Vault publishes 850 CCA, 250A constant amperage draw and 500A burst amperage draw. It also lists 10C continuous discharge and 20C burst discharge. That gives the LI-HD28 meaningful current capability for a motorcycle that has to start reliably while also supporting amplifiers, lighting and other accessories.
The battery still has to be matched to the charging system. Vault limits maximum input to 140A through the BMS. If the motorcycle has an altered or upgraded charging system, we want to know its actual output before treating more charging current as automatically better. The battery and charging source need to be designed to work together.
The BMS disconnects internally if voltage falls below 10V or rises above 15.2V. Those are protection limits, not normal operating targets. If the battery disconnects because one of those thresholds is crossed, it remains disconnected until outside voltage is applied. Once powered back on, the BMS and battery return to operation.
That recovery behavior matters in the shop and on the road. A protected LI-HD28 can look completely dead even though the BMS has intentionally isolated the pack. The correct response is to find the charging or discharge problem that caused the protection event, correct it and then wake the battery correctly.
Physically, LI-HD28 measures 6.5 x 4.96 x 6.89 inches and weighs 8.6 pounds. Vault designed the case around the factory Harley battery location and uses top-mounted terminals for a straightforward installation. Exact bike, seat clearance, terminal clearance and aftermarket wiring still need to be checked before installation.
Every LI-HD28 package included a compatible smart charger. That removes the guesswork from choosing an external charger for the battery.
Compared with the newer LI-HD41, the LI-HD28 does not have lower published starting or output-current figures: Vault lists 250A constant draw, 500A burst and 850 CCA for both. The LI-HD41’s main published advantage is capacity—41Ah versus 28Ah. LI-HD28 is published with a 140A maximum input and 15.2V high-voltage BMS disconnect; LI-HD41 is currently published at 135A maximum input and a 15V high-voltage disconnect.
