Beyma SQL60B 4-Ohm Compact High-Efficiency Tweeter Pair

When the mids already have enough output but the top end starts disappearing once the vehicle gets loud, the fix is not always a giant bullet tweeter. Sometimes the real problem is getting enough clean high-frequency output into a location that barely has room for a tweeter at all.

The SQL60B is Beyma’s compact answer for that job. It is sold as a pair, rated at 4 ohms, 30 watts AES per tweeter and 97.5 dB sensitivity, with a 1-inch edgewound aluminum voice coil, PM4 polymer diaphragm and neodymium motor. The published operating range is 5 kHz–20 kHz with a recommended crossover at 5 kHz or higher.

That puts the SQL60B in a useful space between a conventional low-output tweeter and Beyma’s 105–107 dB Competition models. It gives us more top-end headroom without forcing a large high-frequency driver into a pillar, fairing or custom panel that does not have the room for it.

What problem does the SQL60B solve?

A strong 6.5- or 8-inch midrange can stay clear at volumes where a normal car-audio tweeter starts sounding buried. Once that happens, turning up treble EQ is not a real solution. You are asking the same tweeter to make more output from the same small motor and diaphragm.

The SQL60B starts from a more efficient platform. At 97.5 dB sensitivity, it needs less amplifier voltage to reach the same acoustic level than many conventional tweeters.

That gives us headroom. Instead of running the tweeter at the edge of its capability, we can keep the high-frequency section clean and level-match it properly to the mids.

SQL60B vs. AST50B: polymer diaphragm vs. aluminum diaphragm.

These two are close enough in size and sensitivity that the real difference is not “which one is louder?”

SQL60B: 30 watts AES, 97.5 dB sensitivity, PM4 polymer diaphragm and a 1-inch edgewound aluminum voice coil. Choose it when the system benefits from the SQL60B’s slightly higher power capacity and polymer-diaphragm design.

AST50B: 25 watts AES, 98 dB sensitivity, aluminum diaphragm and the same general compact 1-inch voice-coil format. Choose it when the AST aluminum-diaphragm platform better fits the system goal.

The sensitivity difference is only half a decibel. That is not enough to make one universally better. We choose between them from the diaphragm construction, amplifier plan, placement and the rest of the speaker package.

SQL60B vs. AST05: compact packaging vs. Competition-level output.

SQL60B: roughly 1.93 inches across, 97.5 dB sensitivity and a 5 kHz-up operating role. It is the better fit when the tweeter location is tight and the system needs strong—but not extreme—high-frequency output.

AST05: 105 dB sensitivity and a larger Competition-series format. It makes more sense when the system is fighting wind, road noise or several very efficient mids and the high-frequency section genuinely needs another level of acoustic output.

If the SQL60B already reaches the target level cleanly, the smaller tweeter is usually the smarter answer. We do not cut a bigger hole just to buy a larger number on the spec sheet.

SQL60B vs. SC30: output vs. lower crossover flexibility.

The SC30 is a different kind of tool. It gives up a lot of sensitivity compared with SQL60B, but it can work lower in frequency.

SC30: choose it when the midrange below needs the tweeter to take over earlier and the system does not require the same high-output efficiency.

SQL60B: choose it when the midrange can stay clean through the upper mids and the tweeter mainly needs to add efficient 5 kHz-and-up output from a very small location.

That crossover relationship matters more than simply comparing wattage.

The 5 kHz minimum is part of the product.

The SQL60B is published from 5 kHz to 20 kHz with a recommended crossover at 5 kHz or higher. We treat that as a system requirement, not a suggestion to ignore because a DSP can technically type in a lower number.

Below its intended range, a tweeter has to move farther and dissipate more heat. That is exactly where damage risk rises quickly.

If the midrange cannot reach the 5 kHz handoff cleanly, the correct fix is a different high-frequency driver or a different midrange—not forcing the SQL60B lower just because it fits the panel nicely.

Why 30 watts AES is useful on a 97.5 dB tweeter.

The SQL60B does not need midrange-style power. It only reproduces the upper portion of the spectrum, and it starts from a high-efficiency platform.

The 30-watt AES rating gives the tweeter useful thermal headroom, but the amplifier still needs to be set correctly. A clipped high-frequency channel or a crossover set too low can damage a tweeter long before the amplifier reaches some headline wattage figure.

We set clean voltage first, then level-match the SQL60B to the mids. More available power is only useful when the driver is protected and the gain structure is under control.

The compact package is a major reason to choose it.

The SQL60B measures about 49 mm / 1.93 inches across, 33 mm / 1.30 inches deep and uses a 42 mm / 1.65-inch baffle cutout. That is a very manageable footprint for a high-efficiency tweeter.

In a motorcycle fairing, pillar, dash or compact custom pod, those dimensions can matter more than chasing another few decibels of sensitivity. A tweeter with more output does not help if the motor will not fit behind the panel or the face takes over the whole layout.

Where we would use the SQL60B.

This is a natural partner for efficient Beyma 6.5- and 8-inch mids in a high-output daily driver, motorcycle, Jeep or powersports build where the system needs more top-end headroom but still has to look and package like a finished mobile-audio install.

It also makes sense in custom doors and pillars where we want the high-frequency section close to the midrange without giving up a huge amount of panel space to the tweeter.

With DSP, we high-pass it safely, level-match it against the mids, then check polarity, timing and installed response. The goal is not to make the SQL60B sound obviously loud. The goal is for the top end to stay present when the rest of the system comes up.

The practical result: the SQL60B gives a serious Beyma system a compact PM4-polymer top end with enough efficiency and power capacity to stay clean at real volume without forcing a larger Competition tweeter into a location that does not need one.
