Want a 10.1-inch screen, wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, but still need the vehicle to keep the factory features it can support? That is where the KW-Z1000AW makes sense. In a compatible vehicle, the iDatalink Maestro side gives us a way to add a much larger, more modern radio without automatically giving up things like steering-wheel controls, factory amplifier integration or supported vehicle information.

It is also a solid starting point for a full audio system. Three 4-volt preamp outputs give you clean front, rear and subwoofer connections for aftermarket amplifiers. The radio has a 13-band EQ, digital time alignment, high-pass and low-pass filters, and 3-way crossover capability, so there is useful tuning control built in before an external DSP is even part of the conversation. Four camera inputs give you room for rear, front and two additional camera views instead of limiting the install to one backup camera.

You also get a 10.1-inch 1280 × 720 capacitive HD display with optical bonding, wired or wireless Apple CarPlay, wired or wireless Android Auto, Bluetooth 5.2, built-in Wi-Fi, HD Radio, SiriusXM readiness, HDMI input, high-resolution audio playback and rear USB-C charging.

What it will not do: this is not a universal 10-inch radio that belongs in every dash. The correct vehicle-specific Maestro APX mounting and interface parts, Maestro RR or RR2 module, and vehicle wiring may be required. Factory-feature retention varies by vehicle. If the vehicle is not supported properly, this is not a radio we would force into the job.
