When the Part You Need Doesn’t Exist: CNC & Laser Fabrication at SMS
A lot of custom audio work starts with the same problem: the part we need simply does not exist.
Maybe the speaker does not fit the factory opening. Maybe the amp rack needs to fit around a seat bracket. Maybe the customer wants an acrylic panel, engraved trim, lighting, or a clean mounting solution that cannot be bought out of a catalog. That is where fabrication becomes part of the system instead of an extra decoration at the end.
CNC Work Solves Repeatable Fitment Problems
Our Camaster Stinger X3 gives us a 4×8 CNC platform for cutting panels, enclosure parts, speaker adapters, amp-rack components and other pieces that need repeatable geometry. Once the fit is designed correctly, CNC lets us make the part cleanly instead of free-handing every opening and hoping both sides match.
Laser Work Handles Detail Differently
Our Thunder Nova 51 CO2 laser is useful for acrylic, engraving, trim details and lighting-related fabrication where fine detail matters. It lets us add logos, patterns, labels or illuminated features while keeping the part tied into the rest of the build.
Acrylic and Lit FX
Lighting works better when it looks like it belongs there. Engraved acrylic, speaker rings, custom panels and Lit FX pieces can be designed around the vehicle instead of stuck on afterward. The mounting, wiring, controller access and serviceability still matter just as much as the finished look.
Fabrication Is Also About Serviceability
A clean custom part should not make the vehicle impossible to work on later. We think about fasteners, wire routing, access to fuses and amplifiers, removable panels and how the vehicle gets put back together. Good fabrication solves the fitment problem without creating three new ones.
Real SMS Laser Work
The original version of this post was mostly repeated social-media embeds. We kept one of the original proof posts below and added the explanation that was missing.
